I am proud to serve families throughout the North Front Range of Colorado as a court-appointed child and family investigator. My role is to make recommendations about parenting time, decision-making responsibilities, and other contested issues. Centering the best interests of the children, I work hand in hand with families, parents, matrimonial attorneys, and officers of the court.
Learn more about the investigation process, my approach, and the other roles I can take on below.
As a child and family investigator, I have many tasks to complete. My investigation will include reports from parents, self-reports, email communications, home visits, and collateral interviews, which may include interviews with a school counselor or teacher, a child’s pediatrician, or mental health provider. Little by little, these various sources of information provide me with enough data to make recommendations. As these tasks vary greatly from family to family, I make a point to adapt my approach and remain flexible while staying neutral and objective. In other words, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to doing good CFI work.
Some factors that influence my investigation include the following:
- Family culture, history, and support network -
- Quality of relationships -
- Strengths and limitations of family communication styles -
- Educational factors -
- Occupational considerations that may affect parenting time -
- Child safety -
- Role of grandparents or extended relatives -
- Power dynamics at home -
- Mental health and substance use -
A CFI report can be highly influential in family courts. It should be comprehensive and clearly written. A report that does not address the appropriate legal standards in the case may be useless to the court. My investigations are mindfully conducted with legal standards in mind and occasionally require consideration of Colorado case law.
- Testifying as an expert -
- Participating in status conferences -
- Providing status reports or other updates to the court -
- Informing parties of the advantages of settling disputes -
- Maintaining communication with parties and collecting information from collateral sources -
- Serving as a parenting coordinator after the court’s decision -
- Providing advice for parenting exchanges, holiday scheduling conflicts, and medical and school-related issues -
